Events: Kids' Play Dates in October 2013

Get up in arms with a puppet show, chill out around a bonfire, and curl up with a good book

Dog Days

Oct. 12: Dalmatian Day The spotted, fire fighting Fidos take a break from their usual duties to teach children about fire safety. Kids can make their own crafts, try to set a new record for the fastest bucket brigade, and — naturally — pet the pooches. 10 a.m. $5; $2 children 5 and older; under 2 free; $10 family (2 adults and 2 children). FASNY Museum of Firefighting. 117 Harry Howard Ave., Hudson. 518-822-1875 or www.fasnyfiremuseum.com

Oct. 5: Children of the World Local musicians and comedians entertain at this festival. Munch on local produce while watching a dance performance, or spend some time in the bounce house or on the slide. A portion of the day’s proceeds aids underprivileged kids in the U.S., Africa, India, and the Philippines with their medical, educational, and food expenses. 10 a.m. $10 in advance, $15 at the door, children under 7 free. His Word Revealed Church. 205 Rte. 28, Kingston. 845-706-5331 or www.childrenoftheworld.eventbrite.com

Reading Room

Oct. 5: Children’s Book Festival Bring your avid reader to meet some of his or her favorite writers. More than 70 children’s book authors and illustrators — including Gail Carson Levine (Ella Enchanted) and Bruce Degen (the Magic School Bus series) — gather to greet their little fans. Kids can ask questions about the stories, watch live drawing demonstrations, and even take home autographed copies. 10 a.m. Robert E. Bell Middle School. 50 Senter St., Chappaqua. 914-238-8050 or www.chappaquachildrensbookfestival.com

Fired Up

Oct. 13: Family Bonfire Night Take advantage of the cool weather before the air turns frigid. Pack your blanket and fill your picnic basket for an evening around the campfire. Be sure to pick up some marshmallows and roasting sticks on your way in; glow sticks and other light-up items are also available for purchase for some sparkling fun. And we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the stargazing opportunity. 6 p.m. Rain date Oct. 20. $12; children under 10 free. Boscobel House and Gardens. 1601 Rte. 9D, Garrison. 845-265-3638 or www.boscobel.org
