July 6: Fireflies These little insects light up the sky, but did you ever wonder why that is? Learn what makes these little fliers glow, and create an observation jar so you can take some home with you. Recommended ages 5 and up. 10 a.m. $7, $5 children. July 13: Hummingbirds If you aren’t fast enough, you might miss these speedy sky creatures. Absorb fun facts about them — like just how fast they can fly and what plants attract them — and even bring home a nectar plant to see if you can entice them to your own garden. Back in the Day
July 4: An Old-Fashioned Independence Day Take a look back in time and experience what our original Independence Day would have been like. Join a reenactment group — all garbed in long skirts and tricorn hats — for Colonial era games and food. 2 p.m. $10 per car. July 29-Aug. 2: Junior History Camp Kids pretend to live in the 18th century, costumes and all. During the weeklong camp, participants learn to make period meals and toys, play old-fashioned sports, and create a special exhibit to display to their families. 9 a.m. $120. July 6: Kids Scavenger Hunt Nature is full of hidden treasures — see if you can uncover them! Camp Out
July 8-12 & 22-26: Panorama Weeklong Summer Programs Spend a week at Frederic Church’s Olana. During the first program, kids hear all about Church’s time camping in Millinocket Lake, Maine; they also participate in activities such as basket-weaving, sketching, and building shelters. For the second week, campers explore Church’s artwork inspired by his overseas travels; then they make international foods and crafts, as well as learn multicultural music and dance.
