Born in Westchester County, Robert W. Weir (1803-1889) was a historical painter who taught art to the cadets at West Point for more than 40 years. Robert W. Weir and the Poetry of Art, on view at the exhibition gallery at Boscobel, features paintings, drawings, and prints by this prolific artist, who is a member of the famed Hudson River School. belleayre music festival

For 22 years, the Belleayre Music Festival has been welcoming internationally acclaimed artists to the Catskills. This month’s lineup kicks off with the Catskill Mountain Jazz Series (Aug. 1-3 and 9-10). Headliners include Latin jazz master Paquito D’Rivera and the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band (Aug. 3), and piano virtuoso Bil Charlap (right) and his trio (Aug. 9). Broadway song-and-dance legend Ben Vereen (Aug. 17) and comedienne Rita Rudner (Aug. 24) keep things hopping mid-month; the Belleayre Festival Orchestra closes the season with music by the band Pink Floyd (Aug. 31). For the last six summers, the one-of-a-kind Spielgeltent at Bard SummerScape has become a hot after-hours destination, offering everything from cabaret and circus performances to dance parties. This season, the “Midsummer Dancing” schedule includes Noche Porteña: A Night of Argentine Tango Music and Dance. Don’t know how to tango? No problem: Take an introductory lesson early in the evening (no partner required), then practice your new skills to music provided by the J.P. Jofre Hard Tango Trio. In between, marvel at the stepping skills of the internationally renowned duo of Carolina Jaurena and Andres Bravo, whose sultry performance of Argentina’s native dance is a highlight of the evening.
