Crossing the Mid-Hudson Bridge during rush hour is never easy, as anyone leaving Poughkeepsie at 5 p.m. on a Friday can attest. But believe it or not, traffic was even worse prior to 1949, when there were still only two lanes feeding the bridge on the Dutchess County side. That year, the state widened the eastbound side of the bridge to three lanes and added a third tollbooth. Seventeen years later, in 1966, the city of Poughkeepsie and the New York State Bridge Association opened the Arterial Highway to further alleviate congestion.
