What’s special: Named “Best Country Inn in Connecticut” by Connecticut Magazine in 2010, this four-star, Victorian inn is minutes from the Connecticut River, Long Island Sound, Mystic Seaport, and the coastal town of Essex, known for its quaint streets lined with boutique shops, art galleries, museums, theaters, and historic sites. The restaurant serves innovative fare complemented by a 5,000-bottle wine cellar. In spring and summer, guests dine al fresco on the covered porch overlooking the garden. The inn has 22 guest rooms and suites, many with separate sitting areas, whirlpool tubs, and canopy or four-poster mahogany beds. The outdoor activities run the gamut, from beaches to boating and fishing, and winery tours to hiking and biking trails.
