Chocolate Bark and Biscotti: Desserts That Won't Wreck Your New Year's Resolutions

Two treats that look like they’ll wreck your
New Year’s resolution — but won’t

With the heralding of the new year comes the determination to stop wolfing down leftover holiday fudge and cookies. In fact, by the government’s estimation at usa.gov, getting fit and losing weight rank as numbers five and six, respectively, on the list of the most popular New Year’s resolutions. For many people, that means dessert is strictly forbidden. January is the time to tighten your belt, skip the sweets — or choose a healthier (but less flavorful) option — and get your diet on. But that chocolate bark looks oh-so-good!

Never fear, health-conscious diners. It is possible to have low-calorie treats that taste just as scrumptious as their fat- and sugar-laden counterparts. Here we’ve highlighted two desserts that deliver all the flavor you crave while laying off the carbs.

Dark Chocolate Almond Bark
This dark chocolate treat is smothered in dried apricots, cranberries, and almonds. But most delicious is the fact that a serving weighs in at just 150 calories — that’s about 100 calories less than traditional bark. The secret lies in the chocolate, which contains close to 50 percent cocoa and therefore brings the calorie count down without sacrificing the taste. Find this dessert at Babycakes Café in Poughkeepsie, or click here for the recipe to try it yourself.

biscotti

Biscotti
Made by the Hudson Valley Dessert Company in Saugerties, these traditional Italian cookies are available in four different flavors: almond, chocolate almond, orange hazelnut, and almond marble. Made with no butter, oil, or artificial sweeteners, the bars are 60 calories each, which translates to just one point on the Weight Watchers scale (a Maryland branch of the weight-loss group orders them in bulk to distribute at meetings); they are perfect for nibbling with your evening cup of coffee.
