Belleayre

They do lessons right.

Skiers have flocked to Belleayre ever since it opened in 1949 (when it boasted the first chairlift in the state).

With 51 trails on 175 skiable acres, eight lifts, and a vertical drop of 1,404 feet, everyone from novices to pros can find their groove to ski and snowboard to their heart’s content. Belleayre also offers a challenging terrain park, progression park, plus cross-country trails for fans of Nordic-style skiing.

A big Belleayre draw is its multitude of programs for all ages and abilities. A snowschool staff of more than 100 instructors provides lessons for alpine skiers, snowboarders, telemark skiers (a technique that uses specialized ski equipment), cross-country skiers, and snowskaters (think a skateboard for the snow).

Private lessons and clinics are available, and kids age 12 and under can sign up for classes to learn the ABCs of skiing and help them gain confidence in the sport. Belleayre also offers an adaptive snowsports program for kids and adults with cognitive, physical, and emotional disabilities.

Where to Dine & Stay

Several properties are partners in Belleayre’s Ski & Stay Packages. Our recommendation is The Emerson Resort and Spa in Mount Tremper (a 2017 Best of Hudson Valley winner for Catskills Getaway), which offers rooms at its (dog-friendly) Inn and Lodge; their spa is renowned for pampering.

For a stay-only option there’s no place quite like Kate’s Lazy Meadow Motel, also in Mount Tremper. Owned by Kate Pierson of the rock group the B-52s, it features vintage ’50s-style décor, and a new Lazy Lodge getaway property that combines ’50s flair with rustic charm.
