What to Do This Weekend: August 12-14, 2016

From blueberries bites to an outdoor art tour, we’ve got everything you need for a stellar summer weekend

Outdoor Film Weekend, Storm King Art Center, New Windsor

This weekend, music, art and cinema collide at Storm King’s film weekend under the stars. Delve into the 53rd New York Film Festival Official Selection Troublemakers: The Story of Land Art on Friday, a compelling documentary about a group of driven and visionary young artists. Then, Saturday’s Film Ramble will feature a performance by Bruce Levingston on piano and short films by Dennis Oppenheim, Jarred Alterman, and others on multiple screens in the Art Center. Munchies and drinks will be served starting at 5 pm, followed by meditation sessions held between 6:30-7:30 pm under The Big Quiet. Food and drink vendors will include beer and wine service, gourmet cupcakes, freshly made smoothies, and cold-pressed juices, plus plenty of farm-fresh, healthy local chow. Saturday’s screenings will begin at 9 pm.

Feral Conservatives, The Wherehouse, Newburgh

With a dreamy, introspective folk sound that channels their Cranberries and Velocity Girl influences, Feral Conservatives have found a niche that’s garnered them a fair amount of attention in recent years. With their newest album, Here’s to Almost, rated 4-stars by New Noise, the band is channeling that momentum into a jam-packed two-week tour this August. “As far as jangly indie rock goes, it doesn’t get much better than this,” NNM says of the group. This Saturday, they’ll take those jangly vibes to The Wherehouse stage. Gunslinger will open the show at 8 pm.

17th Annual Blueberry Festival, Canal Street and Liberty Square, Ellenville

This weekend, there’s only one place you can grub fluffy, golden-blueberry pancakes, shop your way through more than 175 vendors, dance in a village square to bumpin’ live music, and pop by a homemade blueberry-pie judging contest to see who takes home the blue(berry) ribbon. That’s right, it’s the 17th annual Ulster County Blueberry Festival, and it’s going down this Saturday, rain or shine. With sweet, fresh blueberry pies for sale and plenty of activities for the kids (including face painting, interactive inflatables, games, and more), it’s sure to be a can’t-miss weekend event for the whole family. For those who prefer a good lemon meringue, don’t be discouraged! Organizers The Ellenville Wawarsing Chamber of Commerce (EWCOC) promise non-blueberry desserts as well.
