Investigate insects, sing along to a classic, or cheer on a pack of chubby, racing pigs

September is virtually upon us, and we have plenty of daily events to welcome you into the new month. Whether you’re looking to rock out, get down and dirty, or sit back and watch a movie, the valley is sprawling with spectacular events between now and Thursday. And as always, come back in a few days for our regular roundup of What to Do This Weekend.

 

Monday: 64th Anniversary Performance of John Cage’s 4’33”, Woodstock Artists Association & Museum, Woodstock

First performed by John Cage in 1952, the sixth annual tribute to the composer’s landmark, controversial “silent piece” will feature the musical talents of multiple Grammy-nominee Tracy Bonham. A Q&A session will follow the show, hosted by former New York Magazine art critic Kay Larson. Admission to this historic performance is free.

 

Tuesday: Incredible Insects at Pine Bush, Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission, Albany

For all things creepy, crawly, and squishy, visit the Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission to get up close and personal with the valley’s tiniest inhabitants. The hour-long exploration session includes hands-on learning with a short hike along nature center grounds, along with an arts-and-crafts session, perfect for your baby bugs. The event will take place for a second day on Aug. 31 at 10 am.

Wednesday: The Columbia County Fair, Columbia County Fairgrounds, Chatham

Just in case you were bummed about the close of last week’s Dutchess County Fair, you now have something to look forward to. The 176th Columbia County Fair begins this Wednesday, Aug. 31 and extends until Monday, Sept. 5 for six days full of fair fun. Jump on the Ferris wheel, or head to the stage for Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper Lonestar. And don’t forget to check out family friendly farm action at the Sue Wee pig races.

Thursday: The Brewster Film Festival, Various Locations, Brewster

This go-to event for Putnam County flick fanatics launches into its fith year with 40 shorts and 10 feature films. Attend Thursday through Sunday for a variety of  cinematic events, including a wine tasting and screening, “dinner and a movie” at Brewster’s own Bull and Barrel Brew Pub, and even a Saturday morning-cartoon viewing party, which is worth getting animated about.
