Haile Binns and Grace Knowlton Take Art Full Circle in Exhibit

We spoke with emerging local artist Haile Binns about her partnership with acclaimed artist Grace Knowlton at the Sparkill’s Union Arts Center

Experience the work of emerging artist Haile Binns of Orangeburg featured in the “Full Circle” art exhibit in partnership with acclaimed artist Grace Knowlton at the Union Arts Center in Sparkill through January 6.

The thoughtful artist shares some of the inspiration behind her work. “I try to convey in my artwork the beauty of the darkness — the beauty of the color black, the beauty of my ancestors and my roots,” Binns explains. “I think it’s important for people to know that black and the darkness come from the same place as the light and it is good, loving, and pure and where everything starts and begins. It is black in our mother’s womb, the universe is black, and seeds are planted in the darkness. Black is the source and the light. It is a color that is feared often by society and often associated with evil, but it is the complete opposite of that. I want people to see my work and not be afraid of transition or change in the their lives not be afraid of the darkness of the black. I want my art to give people hope. My art gives me hope creating it.”

Upcoming Meet the Artist receptions feature Binns on Saturday, November 26; Knowlton (whose work is included in many collections from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, England) on Sunday, November 27; and both artists on Saturday, December 17.
