Tax expert Aaron Smyle and designer Ana Claudia Schultz team up as a husband-and-wife duo and combine their talents to bring The Beck to the Hudson Valley.

Across the Hudson Valley, art galleries are meccas for creativity, serving as extensions of the region’s thriving artistic community. During the COVID-19 pandemic, local tax expert Aaron Smyle and designer Ana Claudia Schultz saw a need to contribute to the sustenance of creativity in the Hudson Valley through the opening of their curated gallery this fall.

Located in downtown Rhinebeck, The Beck amplifies local creative voices and engages with the Hudson Valley community. Dutchess County’s new creative hub serves as a multi-purpose event space and gallery that displays local artists’ works to inspire creators and embrace the Hudson Valley community as well as house the founding duo’s office spaces.

Schultz, principal of Ana Claudia Design, and Smyle, president of Smyle and Associates, were inspired to open The Beck in the historic Dutchess County center because of the tremendous revival of creativity they have observed, including several art installations and art galleries that have been popping up throughout the Hudson Valley in recent years.

“My wife and I decided that putting this space together not only serves our community but us as a couple. This shared coworking space means Ana Claudia will oversee her design business and I will do my tax and accounting work — particularly as it relates to design clients,” says Smyle.

Schultz and Smyle aim to support local creatives through this initiative, which they launched during the COVID-19 pandemic. Schultz said in a statement that “our hope is that by amplifying the voices of local creatives will not only support artists in need during this time, but serve as a way for locals to keep a finger on the region’s creative pulse.”

The couple supports the arts in the Hudson Valley by also incorporating locally crafted furniture in their professional offices at The Beck, as well as murals, fine art, rugs, and even customized leather door handles throughout the gallery.

Schultz showcases her eclectic interior design skills throughout The Beck. Her work can be seen through her projects in the Hudson Valley, Manhattan, Brooklyn, and New Jersey or on Goop, Rue Magazine, Domino, House Beautiful, and HGTV.

The Beck serves the Hudson Valley community as a collective space where artists and makers are able to showcase their stunning and extraordinary hand-crafted furniture, art, housewares, or creative designs. A new maker is featured quarterly inside art gallery on Rhinebeck’s Mill Street.

“The Beck is our love letter to the Hudson Valley — a thank you for the boundless talent and beauty it has to offer,” says Smyle.

The gallery welcomes new artists and community members. Stop by the modern artist’s hub on your next day trip to Rhinebeck.
