Rock and Roll Means Wellness

Kingston’s beloved O+ Festival returns for its 10th year. The weekend-long celebration of art, music, and good health includes mural painting, pop-up shops, wellness workshops, and an absolutely stacked lineup of musicians performing across town. This year’s line-up includes dance punks !!! (Chk, Chk, Chk), folk-rock’s Elvis Perkins (pictured above), cellist Julia Kent, the cabaret pop of World/Inferno Friendship Society, and local lo-fi maestro Peter Naddeo.

A Fever Breaks in Bethel

Josh Ritter is one of America’s finest lyricists, pairing his alternately contemplative and kick-ass folk-rock with meditations on family, loss, and history. He will perform songs from his Jason Isbell-produced 2019 album Fever Breaks, as well as deep cuts from his long career.

Not So Delicate

Delicate Steve, aka Steve Marion, makes the sort of hybrid-pop in which everyone can find something to enjoy, with hints of surf rock, strummy folk, west African polyrhythms, and more. He’ll perform songs from 2019’s Till I Burn Up, among others.

A Gala and Gladys

Celebrate the Bardavon’s 150th anniversary with a performance by seven-time Grammy winner Gladys Knight and her orchestra. Songs performed include: “Midnight Train to Georgia,” “Every Beat of My Heart,” and “Love Overboard.” Funds raised by the gala help underwrite many programs that cannot support themselves.

Regional Radicals

The Dorsky Museum has called their 2019 Hudson Valley Artists show Madness in Vegetables, emphasizing the earthy, boreal quality of the works of the display, as well as the unique – some might say deranged – perspectives that have gone into making them. All-new works from painter Mara Held, sculptor Bob Barry, and mixed-media found-object artist Elisa Lendvay, as well as many more, will be on display.

Through Nov 10, Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art, New Paltz, 845.257.3844, www.newpaltz.edu/dorskymuseum

Buddhist Bonanza

Monks from Drepung Loseling Monastery perform The Mystical Arts of Tibet in this stage show. Traditional instrumentation, multi-phonic chanting, and ritual costumes are all on the table for performance, traveling the world to promote peace. The monks will be creating a sand mandala at UPAC from October 9-12, and members of the public are encouraged to drop in and watch, ask, and learn.

The Art of War

Rockland Center for the Arts (ROCA) has co-programmed two ambitious exhibitions which each examine, in their own way, the lasting wounds of war. Vietnam Vet Howard Miller has been using art to cope with his PTSD since leaving the Navy in 1965, and the sensitive, abstract compositions of The Body Reconfigured externalize his ongoing trauma through radical reorganizations of the human form. Alongside is Endless Journey, from painter and sculptor Chanthou Oeur, who tells his own personal story — orphaned at a young age in Cambodia, a fighter in multiple wars, and a peasant-prisoner under the Khmer Rouge — as well as that of his country through bold compositions that depict human degradation even as they transcend it.
