We Asked for Local Prom Stories and Got This Gem From 1957

A cheery blue envelope arrived in our office, containing a small blue velveteen booklet — with a tiny pencil attached with a cream braid — a black-and-white photo of a lovely young woman in a white dress, and a letter beautifully written in Palmer script.

Rose Naomi Acker Lictro of Blauvelt was a senior at Christopher Columbus High School in the Bronx when, at age 17½, she and her boyfriend Sonny attended her “Senior Promenade” (now you know where “prom” originated!) on May 24, 1957. Rose wrote, “Sonny wore a white tuxedo, looking hot!”

After the prom at the Hotel Roosevelt in Manhattan, they took a horse-and-buggy ride in Central Park before hitting the “Blue Angel” nightclub: “We got to meet Tommy Sands and got his autograph.” They had time to take a romantic ride back and forth on the Staten Island Ferry before getting home to the Bronx in time for their 5:30 a.m. curfew!
