Rx For Rover

Many pet owners consider Fluffy and Fido to be integral members of the family. And just like humans, pets can sometimes become seriously ill. But with the opening of the Veterinary Specialty Center of the Hudson Valley, a sparkling new, 6,000-square-foot facility in Wappingers Falls, your beloved pets can receive the latest in specialty veterinary care without leaving the Valley. “This facility is better than some human hospitals,” says Dr. Joe Impellizeri, a board-certified veterinarian and medical director of the center. “We are like a Sloan-Kettering for animals.” He’s only half joking.
According to Dr. Impellizeri, you can take your fuzzy friend anywhere for a regular check-up or for standard procedures like neutering. But more serious health issues, like cancer or cardiologic difficulty, require specialty care. With an extensive range of services — including oncology, internal medicine, minimally invasive surgery, cardiology, and behavior treatment — the center is the answer for many Valley pet owners.

“Before, clients were funneled to southern Westchester, Manhattan, or Cornell for this level of service,” says the doctor. “I am so excited to have opened this center, as there is now the ability for patients to receive the highest level of advanced veterinary care right here in the Hudson Valley.” The state-of-the-art hospital also offers a special collaboration with Poughkeepsie’s Vassar College, where Dr. Impellizeri is an adjunct professor of biology. “Aside from maybe Cornell [which has a veterinary program], we are the only facility with this unique relationship,” he says. “In addition, our MRI exceeds any other option in New York State.” — E.S.
