River Revelry

It’s that time of year once again: the holiday hoopla has wound down, the decorations have been packed away, and (for many of us) the number on the scale is higher than it was a month ago. Now we’re looking at our calendars and wondering just what 2009 has in store.

Here in the Hudson Valley, however, the party is not over. In fact, a yearlong celebration is just getting underway, and it promises to be a big one. The Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial has finally arrived: 2009 marks the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s first sail up our magnificent river. In addition, it is 400 years since Samuel de Champlain explored the lake that bears his name, and 200 years since Robert Fulton first inaugurated steamboat travel, also on the mighty Hudson. You’re going to be hearing a lot about Hudson, Champlain, and Fulton over the next 12 months; to be sure that you’re up to speed on this year’s hottest historic guys, check out our handy Quad Cheat Sheet.

Of course, this is just the beginning of our Quadricentennial coverage. Throughout the year we’ll delve more deeply into the history surrounding these men and their journeys, and we’ll keep you up-to-date on the multitude of special events that are planned for our region. The centerpiece of the celebration may well be the opening this fall of the Walkway Over the Hudson (which will traverse the Poughkeepsie Railroad Bridge). Some of the other activities include a six-day kayak trip from the Canadian border to Manhattan, numerous chances to explore replicas of historic ships, tours of Dutch homes and historic sites, and much more. So stay tuned to our future issues — and to www.hvmag.com — for all the latest Quad news.
