Bargain Bonanza

A word from Hudson Valley Editor in Chief, Olivia J. Abel

I sure do love a bargain. It started back when I was little girl; every Sunday afternoon, I would run upstairs to my grandmother’s room to help her clip coupons from the local paper. I also recall (and I’m probably dating myself here) collecting stamps from the grocery store so we could paste them into a little green book that, when filled, would be redeemed for such magnificent items (like the Mickey Mouse alarm clock that dutifully sat by my bed for several years).

As I got older, and had my own money to spend, finding good bargains became even more imperative. My mother and I truly bonded during those awkward teenage years when together we discovered the Woodbury Common Premium Outlets. Later, when I lived in Manhattan, my friends and I eagerly awaited the famous biannual Barney’s Warehouse Sale; afterwards, we’d go out for happy hour to gush over our finds. Unfortunately, I detest crowds as much as I love bargains, so I always stop short of cashing in on the Black Friday fun. I understand that Macy’s opened at 4 a.m. on the day after Thanksgiving last November; I’m quite sure that I would rather pay full price (gasp!) than participate in that madness.

I’ve always been a fan of consignment shops, but now that I have a baby I appreciate them even more. In our region there are several top-notch shops dedicated just to children’s clothes and gear. I now make regular pit stops at Just for Kids in Wappingers Falls, as well as the Trendy Tots Take Two in Beacon, where I find the most darling designer duds — at bargain basement prices — for my little Lily. She is, as my staff constantly reminds me (thanks guys), already a thousand times more fashionable than I will ever be.

Thankfully, there are quite a few upscale consignment/thrift shops that have opened in the Hudson Valley in recent years. Check out our cover story, Live the Good Life for Less, to find out more about these shops — as well as how to get great deals on dining out, pamper yourself for pennies, catch practically free flicks, and much more. You’ll be happy to learn that there are dozens of ways to live the high life — without paying the price!

Our annual Hudson Valley Weddings supplement also appears in this issue. Even if you’re not getting hitched anytime in the near future, you’ll want to check out our display of gorgeous dresses (gray is the hottest hue these days) and learn all about the Valley hot spots where a weekend-long wedding can make for a once-in-a-lifetime celebration.

Happy New Year.

Cheers,
