Ready to maximize you curb appeal, make a statement in your neighborhood, and get the best bang for your buck? Kim Williams, Williams Lumber & Home Centers SVP of Retail Operations, reveals how to update the exterior of your home to make a major impact.
Focus on the Front Door
The front door, entryway to your home, makes a statement from the start. A new front-door paint color can complement your home’s existing color scheme, or it can become a colorful accent piece. The newly painted door can totally transform the look and feel of your home.
“When picking a color for the front door, it is important to stand back and take in all of the colors on and around the home,” Williams says. A colorful front door is a great way to express your personal flair and style. She adds, “Don’t miss out on the opportunity to carry over your newly painted door to the interior side of the door as well.”
Consider carrying over the same exterior color, or coordinate another color in the same color palette. All of this will make a lasting first impression and extend a gracious welcome. Williams suggests using Benjamin Moore premium paints, which have an endless color palette and a variety of sheens to make this project an easy check off the to-do list. You will be elated you did.
One more thing, Williams adds, is don’t forget to “accessorize” your front door. Add on a new lockset, unique door knocker, house number, or kick plate. Of course, if you are sick and tired of that “old front door,” then start over with a new door and change your home’s façade. Williams Lumber offers Therma-Tru exterior doors, fiberglass doors that offer energy efficiency, durability, and very little maintenance.
Transform a Deck, Porch, or Patio
We are all finding creative ways to extend our living space to the outdoors as more time is spent at home with family and friends. The marriage of our indoor comfort has become a priority to recreate outdoors as of late. Most homes have some form of a deck, patio, or porch that has been used to gather, entertain or just hang out. Transforming these areas can have a profound effect on how we feel, live, and play.
Let’s begin with your deck. Refreshing your wood deck and protecting it at the same time is made easier with Benjamin Moore Arborcoat Exterior Stains. Arborcoat comes in a variety of different opacities and colors. You can purchase pint-size color sample cans to test stain selections on the actual wood you will be coating. Williams stresses that preparation is key to any painting or staining job.
If your wood deck is beyond a stain job to bring it back to life, then you may want to consider a new Trex deck. Trex is a high-performance, durable, eco-friendly alternative to wood decking. Trex offers a variety of decking and railing collections so that everyone can build their dream deck.
Last but not least is the porch or patio. Maybe you have a concrete slab that was poured out in your backyard. You dreamed of jackhammering up to get rid of the eye-sore. Try this as a simple solution to resolve that problem. You can paint the concrete slab and throw down an outdoor rug. Or, if you are up for a challenge, paint and stencil a pattern, paint and stripe out a pattern, or paint and create whatever. Let your creativity flow! Again, prep work is extremely important for this project. Benjamin Moore’s Porch and Floor paint is the choice to help you with this project.
To extend onto your newly created patio, you can add some bluestone, decorative stone, and landscaping. Don’t forget to invest in the latest wood or propane fire pits or heaters that can carry your outdoor fun well into the cooler weather.
That is just the beginning to upgrading the exterior of your home. The possibilities are endless and sometimes overwhelming. So, while you are outside starting or finishing these projects, start thinking about your windows, siding, and roof. Williams Lumber will guide and help you nail those projects right the first time. Planning, prepping, and patience are the key to all successful projects!
