{verdigreen}: Find Joy at 3 Artfully Renovated Historic Inns

The Hudson Valley, once celebrated for its charming bed and breakfasts, has long been a favorite destination for both travelers and city residents. The emergence of commercial, large-scale hospitality has cast a shadow over the unique, family-run establishments that once embodied the distinct character of the region.

In 2018, Travis and Azie Shelhorse embarked on a mission to rejuvenate historic havens with their boutique hospitality venture, {verdigreen} hotels. Their objective was to infuse a personal touch into the modern hotel experience.

Coupling Travis’ extensive knowledge of the hospitality sector with Azie’s imagination, they’ve creatively transformed eight historic venues, three of which are in Upstate New York. Twin Gables Guest House in Woodstock, Hotel Mountain Brook in Tannersville, and Silver Maple Farm in East Chatham offer different experiences but they all have one thing in common, their {verdigreen} hotels values which celebrate sustainability, authenticity and foster connection with the community.

The couple’s partnership began back in 2006 on the night they first met, when they danced to the beat of Djembe drums then sat side-by-side sharing their life stories well into the morning. On their first date just 48 hours later, Travis disclosed his intention of owning a boutique hotel brand. He was a New York native working as an investment director for a lodging portfolio in Orlando while Azie was a dance instructor with steadfast intuition and a heart of gold. During that fateful conversation over dinner, the origin story of {verdigreen} hotels took root and their path forward was paved with deliberate decisions to see it come to fruition.

After years of curating their collective hospitality and design experiences, the couple purchased their first property and a landmark of the Hudson Valley, Twin Gables, in October of 2019. It is the oldest operating hotel in Woodstock and was originally a place for artists to stay who were visiting the Byrdcliffe Arts Colony. Taking their cues from the historical context, the Shelhorses revitalized the old Victorian and leaned into its origins by lovingly referring to it as their “little art hotel.” The artwork was hand-selected and the 10 guest rooms were designed around a color palette inspired by each work. Azie and her team painted large scale murals throughout the guest house, driving home the concept of a Bohemian Art space. The couple renovated the building back in 2019 however they had a dream for a second phase of renovations which included the addition of ensuite bathrooms as well as the creation of a wellness terrace on the rooftop. Those renovations are underway and Twin Gables is slated to reopen in Summer of 2024.

Their second property, Hotel Mountain Brook, is a 20-room hotel comprised of two Adirondack lodges and private cabins that sit upon a mountaintop overlooking the village of Tannersville. Tannersville is known as “the painted village in the sky” and is situated in the heart of Catskill Park at 1900 ft, the highest elevation village in all of New York State. The design for Hotel Mountain Brook was influenced by the rustic environment of the mountaintop and complemented by the need for comfort and solace. From its warm woodwork and black moody walls to its signature large scale lighting, Hotel Mountain Brook effortlessly connects you with nature and invites you to an atmospheric escape from the comforts of a plush bed.

Their third {verdigreen} hotel property is The Inn at Silver Maple Farm, in East Chatham, New York where the Hudson Valley meets the Berkshire Mountain foothills. As the name suggests, the Inn at Silver Maple Farm is a farmhouse inn nestled between a bubbling brook and a wide open field. The drive down the Silver Maple tree-lined driveway that leads to the inn is an exhale into a relaxed state of mind. The 11 guest rooms are decorated in a soft color palette with a nod to European pastoral style to transport guests to a peaceful, countryside retreat. Due to its location on acres of land with a walking trail, Silver Maple Farm offers guests an idyllic respite in the serenity of nature.
