When a patient at Montefiore Nyack Hospital meets with their doctor for a consultation on laparoscopic surgery, they may be surprised to learn of another option: a minimally invasive robotic-assisted surgical procedure.
Montefiore Nyack Hospital offers the da Vinci® Surgical System, a highly efficient alternative for complex surgical procedures that provides significant benefits to patients. The da Vinci® Surgical System gives surgeons an advanced set of instruments to perform robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery. Doctors will most frequently use the system for hernia, gallbladder, and colorectal procedures.
“I have been in practice for thirty years and robotic-assisted surgery is a real game changer,” said Lee Fleischer, M.D., F.A.C.S., Director, Department of Surgery at Montefiore Nyack Hospital. “This advanced technology gives surgeons the ability to perform laparoscopic surgical procedures through tiny incisions with great precision and finesse.”
Minimally Invasive Surgeries and Improved Patient Outcomes
Robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgeries are minimally invasive—the surgeon makes very small incisions into the skin. The surgeon then inserts a laparoscope, a thin tube with a light and a camera lens, into the incision opening. Using the da Vinci® Surgical System, the surgeon operates while sitting alongside the patient at a console. Using hand and foot controls and a magnificent 3D vision system, the surgeon controls four small robotic, wristed instruments to perform the procedure.
“With the da Vinci system, I am immersed in a significantly magnified, high-definition, 3D-world far superior to the 2D world of a laparoscopic surgical procedure,” continued Dr. Fleischer. “These advanced robotic instruments go beyond the capabilities of the human hand in their ability to bend and rotate. This allows for greater accuracy and flexibility and improved patient outcomes.”
Patient Benefits
Da Vinci® Robotic-Assisted Surgical System offers numerous benefits to patients, including:
- Less post-operative pain
- Shorter hospital stays
- Reduced scarring resulting from smaller incisions
- Shorter recovery time
- Quicker return to daily activities
- Reduced need for pain medication
“By providing minimally invasive robotic-assisted surgeries to our community, Montefiore Nyack Hospital can deliver better patient care,” added Dr. Fleischer.
At Montefiore Nyack Hospital, surgeons complete an in-depth training program for using the da Vinci® Surgical System. This comprehensive program includes technology training, advanced courses taught by experienced surgeons, hands-on education, application of technical knowledge, and training with the robot.
Montefiore Nyack Hospital, part of the Montefiore Health System, brings the innovations and expertise of a renowned academic medical center to Rockland County.
