When you realize that all those little things, the long weekends with friends, the afternoons rambling around a new town, weren’t so little after all, then it’s time to plan a new kind of adventure. It’s been a minute since you’ve reconnected with friends and the great outdoors. Do it now. The Great Northern Catskills are here, offering not-so-little adventures for your daily enjoyment.
The Great Northern Catskills of Greene County are made up of three distinct areas, the mountains, the valley, and the river. Explore each area’s unique features, and create your own socially distanced itinerary to experience everything you love about the Catskills, from top attractions with new safety protocols in place, to restaurants offering a variety of dining options to ensure each guests’ peace of mind.
Discover the Catskills’ scenic byways, including the Durham Valley Scenic Byway as it travels through the Irish Alps, the Mountain Clove Scenic Byway where the views are open and inspiring, or the Kaaterskill Clove Experience where you will discover the Catskills’ artistic roots, history, and inspiring natural beauty.
Outdoor recreation and adventure are waiting in the Great Northern Catskills – whether you’re up for something extreme, like mountain biking, or looking for a walk in the woods. Tour the grounds of the Mountain Top Arboretum on a self-guided tour of the approximately 178 acres in Tannersville. You’ll find wetlands, gardens, and native plants as you explore the four main areas of the arboretum. Visit Pratt Rock to see what’s considered “New York’s Mount Rushmore,” or zipline on the longest, fastest, and highest zipline canopy tour in North America at Hunter Mountain’s New York Zipline Adventure Tour. Looking for a day of fairways, greens, and challenging back nines? Book a tee time at one of the Great Northern Catskills golf courses.
Feel like a night under the stars? Set up camp at Devil’s Tombstone State Campground in Hunter, one of the oldest campgrounds in the Catskills. State campgrounds are now open and all require reservations, so plan your trip in advance. Prefer glamping? Check out the Lushna cabins at Eastwind Hotel & Bar in Windham.
If you’ve felt cooped up and want to feel the wind in your hair as your heart pounds, head to some of the best mountain biking in NY on singletrack and double track. From the Round Top Trail Network, one of the mountain bike community’s hidden gems, to the winding Windham Path that’s great for riders of all abilities, find a trail and start pedaling. The Windham Mountain Bike Park made significant updates to help guests feel safe. Tickets and bike rental reservations are only available online now. Lessons are available, but only to a max of three people per group.
Lodging properties are taking extra precautions to make guests comfortable during their stays. From additional cleaning and minimized common touchpoints to outdoor seating and increased days between guests, there is a wide range of new procedures in place depending on the property. Dining options are plentiful, with many Catskill restaurants offering takeout, delivery, curbside pickup and sit-down dining options.Â
