Schools Measure Success in Countless Ways

In today’s current unexpected new reality following the coronavirus pandemic, Hudson Valley students and programs are redefining success and creating new opportunities. Although, schools and programs may be operating online for now, exploring the details behind a school’s success and ability to adapt can be helpful in planning your next educational step.

Meeting the challenges in an uncertain environment

The Doane Stuart School has become a leader in not just adapting to the global crisis resulting from the coronavirus outbreak, but thriving, as an independent school. Depending on their academic continuity plan, they have been able to continue learning virtually for all students, in all grades. With over 65 classes taking place Monday through Friday, using a variety of technological resources, all students have been able to continue their education at Doane Stuart. From lower school reading hours to Chemistry labs happening via Google Classroom, the fun, the learning, the joy of discovery never had a pause. While the building may have had to be closed, Doane Stuart was, and is, always open.

Beyond the classroom

For some schools, preparing students for success outside of the classroom includes focusing on their spiritual growth. “Kennedy Catholic High School is Northern Westchester’s premiere college-preparatory high school, serving young people from the surrounding region,” Fred Compton, director of advancement, explains. “Kennedy Catholic follows a rigorous Regents curriculum, while also training students in the sound doctrine of Catholic faith — a combination that makes students well-prepared not only for college, but also for a successful life. Kennedy Catholic offers academics, fine arts, and athletics that equip students with the exceptional strengths colleges value.”

Bringing the world to students and students to the world

Expanding a student’s world is an important focus for schools now more than ever. Dutchess Day School believes that participating in Model United Nations (MUN) can help students appreciate how governments collaborate on the global stage and better understand the subtleties of diplomacy whether operating in periods of calm or navigating a global crisis. For example, Dutchess Day School sent 14 delegates from the 7th and 8th grades to Boston. Students were assigned roles, countries, and situations to research ahead of time. At the conference, they worked to negotiate and reach consensus on global issues with students from other schools representing their own positions and governments. Model UN provides practice with public speaking, research, parliamentary procedure, and writing a position paper. The students develop global awareness and understand the nuances of their assigned country’s positions. Collaborating with students from all over to accomplish a goal has proved to be a huge learning experience.

Achieving success creatively

The Reading Barn gives your child a fun and creative experience, enhancing his or her reading, writing, and math skills in a beautiful outdoor setting. The Barn is located on rural farmland with a majestic view of the Catskill Mountains. Our classrooms mimic the shape of the barns that surround them, and our creative arts classes are conducted in an open-air pavilion, all within the safety and serenity of breathtaking Millbrook, NY. We custom design an academic program to meet each child’s individual needs. The program is limited to 35 children each summer.”
