In 1966, St. Mary’s High School closed its doors for the last time, allowing John F. Kennedy Catholic High School to open our doors for the first time. Now in September of 2020, John F. Kennedy Catholic Preparatory School continues moving forward. This change in name only reflects our mission of preparing young people for success in both the academic and professional worlds.

Our school has consistently sought to provide students with the highest level of education and the best opportunities for growth in mind, body, and spirit. In the last decade, Kennedy has made strides in tailoring scholastic curriculum and community engagement to facilitate its students’ success in competitive academic and professional environments.

The Kennedy education has always been preparatory because of its forward-looking nature. Students are offered a full gambit of AP and college accredited courses, such as the PACE Business Curriculum. Each student receives college counseling from our guidance department, attends our annual college fair, and meets with representatives from these institutions. Programs such as STEM and VEX offer opportunities to students to explore and engage in the sciences. All students are immersed in the dynamic KCPS approach to learning.

The mission of preparing young people for success as they continue on their academic journey has not wavered and will continue to evolve. For nearly ten years, Kennedy has offered a course specifically on the PSAT. The course complements our goal of graduating students that are not only ready to succeed in college but also to perform effectively as adults as they advance in their careers. That means having great verbal, mathematical, and problem solving skills that set our students apart as they enter the next stage of their academic career: the right college or university.

There’s no one way to measure a school’s success. “We believe it should come as no surprise that parents who place their children in private college prep schools are focused primarily on getting them into the right colleges,” says Fr. Mark Vaillancourt, PhD, President and Principal of John F. Kennedy Catholic Preparatory School. “Our metric for success in that area has been, ‘how much merit-based scholarship money are the kids receiving?’ Our class of 2020 netted over $54.7 million and over $215 million over the past five graduating classes. The tool we use to achieve that is a rigorous curriculum, as measured by how many we graduate with Advanced Regents Diplomas (94 percent) and SAT scores (an average combined score of 1223).”

The Class of 2020’s hard work, determination, and dedication earned them this remarkable sum in college scholarships. Kennedy Catholic is proud to have provided them with necessary tools and unique opportunities to achieve this recognition from these institutions of higher education. These exceptional students are the embodiment of the inherent preparatory facet of the Kennedy Catholic education that only keeps moving forward.

Now, Kennedy Catholic Prep is back at school with an in-person and remote learning hybrid model. Our existing iPad Learning Infrastructure has been supplemented by conferencing features of the Smart TVs in each of our classrooms, which have been adjusted to maintain social distancing. Students are sorted into two cohorts that alternate in-person and remote learning each week. While one group learns in the classroom, the other group shares the screen and hears the audio of their instructor either from home or school spaces such as the cafeteria and auditorium. Both students and faculty are excited and grateful for the opportunity to come together as a community in our school building once again.
