GKontos Roofing Specialists: We Are Changing the Perception of Roofing Contractors

[vc_text_separator title=”Partner Content”]

“’Oh! You picked up the phone!’ I hear that all the time when I answer,” says George Kontogiannis, owner of GKontos Roofing Specialists. “When you call us, we always answer or return your call. We have three people working in our office, and a couple of crews out in the field. Many of our staff have worked for us since the beginning and we work together as a well-oiled machine.”

Kontogiannis’ commitment to quality work is the foundation of the business he established in 2005. “I had been hearing a lot of stories about contractors doing bad work, so I got interested in the field. I started doing construction and vowed to always make sure our work was 110%.”

At first, he did all phases of construction, but in 2017, he shifted his company’s purpose solely to providing roofing. GKontos is certified as a GAF Master Elite Contractor, and this Hudson Valley and Westchester County company is among the top 2% of nationwide contractors who have earned this special workmanship and materials warranty. “GAF trusts us and backs us up,” Kontogiannis says. “We will never leave until the home owner is satisfied.”

The GAF Master Elite Contractor warranty is just one of several certifications and awards the GKontos Roofing Specialists team has received. GKontos always uses GAF products because they are rated #1 in North America. “Contractor grade products and other products are not as well built, and don’t stand up over time. They fail over the years,” he says.

“We always pretend your home is one of ours, and take care of it like it’s our own. It’s like you learn in school: Always treat others the way you want to be treated.”

This respect for their customers’ property extends to exterior lighting, driveways, lawns and landscaping. “People take a lot of time and pride in their plants and lawns,” says Kontogiannis, “and we protect them with large canvases and under-dumpster and driveway coverings too.”

On The Roof and In The Attic: Problem Assessment

Following a brief phone intake process, a GKontos field consultant will come to your home, go up on the roof and into the attic, and explain what you need to do and why.

Unlike some companies that provide estimates without even going up on your roof, GKontos always gets on the roof and goes into the attic to assess problems. Issues can range widely, including leaks, ventilation, level of insulation, blocked soffits, mildew, mold, rot, inferior materials or poor workmanship. Once this inspection is completed, GKontos educates potential customers so they understand what the problems are and why it’s important to fix them to protect the value of their home.

“If people underpay for their roof, they usually encounter more problems down the road,” says Kontogiannis. “Without proper air flow in the attic, for example, you can lose years on your exterior/interior paint and lose heat/cooling efficiency inside your house, as well as years off your roof and its warranty. People may block air vents in the attic to avoid cold air coming in, but hot air without ventilation can create ice damming, mold, mildew, etc.”

The GKontos field consultant will take photos, measure rafters and spacing, draw on iPad images to illustrate the work to be done, and give an onsite quote. Customers look at and touch material samples and the field consultant walks them through the choices. Kontogiannis says many customers use asphalt shingles because they are a commonly used roofing material, but they offer a wide choice of specialty roofing options, such as cedar, designer architectural shingles, metal standing seam roofs, and commercial applications as well. GKontos Roofing Specialists also repairs or replaces soffits, fascia and Yankee gutters.

Expert Workmanship and Onsite Supervision

“We are well trained and certified on all roofing systems, and also offer maintenance systems for commercial service contracts under warranty,” says Kontogiannis. “As GAF Master Elite Contractors we undergo inspections from GAF on a random basis. They visit the properties we have worked on, and they check for proper ventilation, workmanship and more. We then receive a report from them following their inspection.”

“Most roofs we see are not installed correctly, and the contractors don’t necessarily resolve the issues that led to the work in the first place. We always determine what the problem really is and resolve it,” says Kontogiannis. “We provide a service, and do not leave the job site until we are completely satisfied with the outcome. We always maintain a safe and clean work environment and typically complete jobs in one day. We have a crew of 8-10 people onsite, including a project manager.”

Once a decision is made, work can usually commence within two to three weeks, depending on the time of year. GKontos Roofing obtains work permits, as needed, and materials are ordered.
