Over 150 Years of Hudson Valley Hospitality
Founded in 1869, Mohonk Mountain House is known for its stunning mountaintop location, surrounded by unspoiled forest, spectacular cliffs, and a pristine glacial lake. The resort and its surroundings were designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986. As the award describes Mohonk, it “keeps alive the nineteenth-century vision that tells us that untrammeled nature has important things to teach us about ourselves.”
The tradition of old-fashioned warmth and attentive service dates back to founder, Albert Smiley, whose original vision was to share hearth and home with friends and kindred spirits. Still owned and operated by the Smiley Family today, the 5th generation of family leadership continues to welcome guests to the resort, providing opportunities for recreation and renewal of body, mind, and spirit in a beautiful, natural setting.
At Mohonk Mountain House, everything you need for an unforgettable getaway is at your fingertips, the only thing you need to focus on is relaxing and exploring the mountaintop. With so much included in your overnight rate, charming accommodations, three meals, afternoon tea and cookies, and a wide variety of resort activities and outdoor recreation, you can be as active or relaxed as you choose during a Mohonk vacation.
Outdoor Adventure Awaits
Located amidst 1,200 acres and surrounded by the 6,500 acre Mohonk Preserve, Mohonk Mountain House boasts over 85 miles of trails for hiking, running, mountain biking, and rock scrambling. The resort offers daily guided hikes in the morning and afternoon. Complete with breathtaking views of the Catskill Mountains, Shawangunk cliffs, Lake Mohonk, and peaceful forest, it’s no wonder this picturesque setting has been attracting travelers for generations.
A wealth of recreation is available for overnight guests, so you can be as active or relaxed as you like. In warmer months, Lake Mohonk is open for swimming at the beach, rowboating, kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing. Enjoy complimentary greens fees on the Scottish-inspired 9-hole golf course dating back to 1897 or try your hand at disc golf course within the forest. Play a round of tennis or a traditional lawn game such as shuffleboard or croquet. No visit to Mohonk is complete without strolling through the arbors and flower beds in the Victorian Show Garden or a trip to the Barn Museum to explore historical items from a bygone era. Just next door at the Stables, enjoy a carriage ride around the property to experience how guests traveled to and from Mohonk before the advent of the automobile.
In the winter, over 30 miles of trails are converted for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. When Mother Nature doesn’t provide enough snow, Mohonk equips guests with Microspikes for winter hiking on the trails. The open air pavilion offers ice-skating and a cup of hot chocolate by the fire. All winter recreation equipment is complimentary for overnight guests.
Hand-Crafted Cocktails and Hudson Valley Cuisine
Led by Executive Chef Jim Palmeri, our culinary team is proud to partner with nearby farms to provide the freshest possible ingredients, sourcing from more than 50 farms in New York State. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch are included in overnight rates and with so many options to choose from, everyone in the family will find a favorite dish to delight your palate. In warmer months, dine outdoors at The Granary, a barbecue overlooking Lake Mohonk.
Although the resort was “dry” for 100 years (the resort was founded by Quakers so there was no alcohol at Mohonk until the 1970s!), the Mountain House offers libations that highlight the remarkable Hudson Valley region. Sourcing from local distilleries, boutique wineries, and craft breweries provides guests with a taste of the Hudson Valley. Taste a local craft beer on tap, hand-crafted cocktail, or a glass of wine by the fireplace in the cozy Carriage Lounge or watch the colors of the sky as the sun sets over the Catskill Mountains at Spirits on the Sunset, the outdoor bar open in warmer months.
Recognized by the readers of Condé Nast Traveler as the Number One Resort Spa in the United States, The Spa at Mohonk Mountain House is a favorite for many travelers who are looking to de-stress. In addition to a solarium flooded with sunlight and a stone fireplace, outdoor heated mineral pool, dry rock sauna, and eucalyptus steam room, the Spa features a full menu of nature-inspired services year-round, including Signature Treatments. An indoor heated swimming pool, comprehensive fitness center, and yoga/motion room for daily classes offer an abundance of complimentary activities.
Offering a timeless getaway for over 150 years, the Smiley Family is ready to welcome you to the mountaintop for the next chapter in history. Let yourself be nurtured by nature at Mohonk Mountain House.
