Dr. Mario Loomis, one of the area’s leading plastic surgeons, remembers his first reaction when he heard about CoolSculpting®.

“At first, as with most of these technologies, I was skeptical that it could do what we do with surgery,” he says. “But I trialed it on a number of my staff and myself, and I was very impressed. Because I’ve done liposuction for so long, I know what tissue feels like when the fat is removed. But with CoolSculpting®, there was nothing negative — no needles, no suction, and no risk of infection.” His work with frozen cell cultures to extract stem cells gave Dr. Loomis insight into the mechanism that makes this new technology so effective and safe.

CoolSculpting® works by cooling fat in isolated areas to the point where there is some freezing of the fat cells. “We then rapidly thaw the cells, which permanently damages them, marking them for removal by the body. The end result is that in three months, you have fewer fat cells. CoolSculpting® tricks the body into using a natural process to remove unwanted cells.”

The entire process takes an hour or two, and 95 percent of Dr. Loomis’ patients need no pain medication — not even Tylenol.

But CoolSculpting®, no matter how revolutionary, is a tool, and one that is not ideal for every case. “That’s where the finesse comes in,” Dr. Loomis says. “It’s how we place these applicators and who is a good candidate. I spend my time in planning and assessment.”

The technology works best in the buttocks, inner and outer thighs, back, the areas of “bra fat,” and the abdomen. But the abdomen requires careful evaluation, since those with core fat — inside the abdomen rather than on the outside of it — are not a candidate. Those with loose skin and muscles require a tummy tuck. “But for the right candidate, the results in the abdominal area are amazing,” Dr. Loomis says.

Of one patient, he says, “It was like ‘Extreme Makeover’ without surgery. Her before and after photos are striking — and her weight is up three pounds.”

Like liposuction, CoolSculpting® is not a weight loss tool; rather it contours the body. In the buttocks area, it can remove ridges or bumps that make clothes fit poorly, and on the thighs it can smooth the dimpled appearance of cellulite — an area liposuction can’t address.

Men are using CoolSculpting®, too. Eliminating those hip rolls improves the fit of their suits.

Use the Free App to Learn If Coolsculpting® Is For You

Equally revolutionary is how to find out if you’re a candidate for CoolSculpting®. Dr. Loomis has a free app, available in both Google Play and the App Store. Patients can download the app, and they can take a picture with their phone and send it in. Sometimes, Dr. Loomis can see immediately that they are not a candidate and save them a trip. With others, he’s not only able to see that they are a candidate for an in-person assessment, he can also give them an estimate of how much the procedure will cost.

Because Coolsculpting® is so non-invasive, people can come for a consultation and have the procedure done the same day.

coolsculpting results

This patient was transformed with CoolSculpting® by Dr. Loomis. She had treatments of her abdomen, waist, bra fat, and inner and outer thighs. She had no weight loss; her weight is actually up three pounds in the post-treatment photo. She began with a treatment of her abdomen on one day, returned on another day to treat her inner thighs and bra fat, and then treated her outer thighs on a third day. CoolSculpting® treatments can easily be divided up like this to accommodate your schedule or your finances.
