You Could Be Part of the Longest Yoga Tree Train This Mother's Day

Keep Rockland Beautiful is going after the Guinness World Record, previously set in India where 3,449 people gathered to form the largest yoga chain.

No plans for Mother’s Day? Don’t get bent out of shape!

Keep Rockland Beautiful, a non-profit dedicated to cleaning, protecting, and beautifying Rockland’s environment, will be hosting a unique Mother’s Day event this year — the longest yoga tree pose train. People of all ages are welcome to experience the beautiful outdoors while attempting to break a Guinness World Record currently held by a group of 3,449 people in India.

A yoga tree pose is easy — it involves is a simple leg stance with your hands held high in the air like branches. Virtually anyone can do the basic pose, but if you’re looking for more of a challenge, the advanced stance involves one foot being placed on the inner thigh on the other leg, which is planted on the ground to keep balance. The pose aims to improve posture, balance, and mental focus.

“The idea was born after our annual dinner when everyone in the room was asked to ‘strike a tree pose’ for a photo op,” said Susan Wilmink, Development Officer for Keep Rockland Beautiful in a released statement. “The resulting photograph of people standing together as a forest of inter-connected trees symbolized how we can all can do our part to work in harmony with the environment… and give a hand to Mother Earth.”

During the event, pictures of participants striking a pose will be taken by film on a drone. After the stretch, participants are encouraged to take a walk around Rockland Lake and enjoy the scenic views.

“We believe this is a wonderful way to enjoy Mother’s Day outdoors with family and friends and be one with Mother Nature,” Wilmink said.

The event will take place on Mother’s Day, Sunday May 14 at 3 p.m. at Rockland Lake State Park. The cost to participate is $25 for adults and teens; $10 for children ages 12 and under. Adults and teens will receive a set of gardening gloves to commemorate the event.
