Woodstock ‘69 Site Added to the National Register of Historic Places

The 1969 Woodstock festival site has joined the ranks of some of our nation’s greatest historical landmarks. Located at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts in Sullivan County, the site has officially been placed on both State and National Registers of Historic Places, noting its monumental cultural significance.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo nominated the site in December 2016 among a list of 26 New York State properties – seven of which were based in the Hudson Valley.

Through this honor, the 600-acre site will obtain tax credits and access to state and federal grants. Already through such initiatives, Bethel Woods Center for the Arts has prompted several preservation plans to maintain the authenticity of the site. Projects include the restoration of original festival paths and markings of key structures, reproduction of several directional signs, the protection of trees that were present at the time of the festival, and more.

But beyond the added monetary padding, this high status will make it possible for the site to stand as a permanent symbol of the times. For generations to come, the festival site will sustain as a place to gather, learn, and re-live the spirit of the ’60s.
