The following statistics were sourced from the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) and the U.S. Department of Labor:10.1 million firms are owned by women, employing more than 13 million people, and generating $1.9 trillion in sales as of 2008.The industry with the lowest concentration of women-owned firms: construction, where just 7% of firms are women-owned.Women own 30% of all businesses, but capture only 11% of the receipts.21 of the Fortune 500 CEOs are women.African American women-owned firms number 1.1 million, employ 272,000 people, and contribute $44.9 billion to the U.S. economy.Firms owned by Hispanic women number 944,000 as of 2013; they employ 408,100 workers and generate an estimated $65.5 billion in revenue.Women comprise 46.8 percent of the total U.S. labor force.The ratio of women’s to men’s earnings for all occupations was 81.2 percent in 2010.But young women aged 16 to 24 earn 95 percent of what their male counterparts do. » Return to the Top 10 Women in Business 2013
