Rodgers Book Barn, Hillsdale
Owner: Maureen Rodgers
Year Established: 1972
Open for in-store shopping, with curbside pickup available
Rodgers opened the Book Barn as an off-season reprieve from her first job, selling out-of-print books to college librarians. Since then, she’s accumulated well over 50,000 books in this out-in-the-hills location, which, true to its name, is a converted barn. Most selections from her comprehensive collection can be had for $5 or less, making the trip a certified steal.

Magpie Bookshop, Catskill
Owner: Kristi Gibson

Gibson’s small storefront has been on the forefront of Catskill’s retail resurgence, growing from a single floor to multiple floors of lightly-distressed paperbacks, along with art books, store pups, live music, and more. Gibson’s handiwork can be found on shelves throughout town, where she leaves free books at businesses like cafe/gallery HiLo for the curious to scrounge.

Half Moon Books, Kingston and Tivoli
Owner: Jessica DuPont
Year Established: 2009
Open for in-store shopping
Half Moon was a bit run-down and disheveled when DuPont bought the business more than a decade ago. She has transformed it into Uptown’s premiere bookstore, stocked to the gills with good-quality paperbacks for both the general reader and the aesthete. And she has continued to expand, including the opening of a second store in Tivoli in the fall of 2019.
