Positioned solemnly, this 48-foot, bronze statue of the Rosary Madonna towers over the Hudson River with tenderness to welcome visitors. The 6.5-ton figure, designed by New Rochelle muralist Lumen Martin Winter, was cast in Pistoia, Italy, in 1959, and was blessed by Pope John XXIII at the Vatican. However, it stood at Good Counsel College in White Plains until 1977, when it was donated to the organization that currently owns it.
This figure, holding a string of rosary beads, stands on a star-shaped platform, just like someone else you might know — that green, copper lass on Liberty Island. On the walk up to the Rosary Madonna, you can view several stone sculptures of the Stations of the Cross. Her home — spanning 160 wooded acres — serves as a retreat for Roman Catholics to pray, reflect, and find peace; there are 54 private rooms and a separate youth center with two dormitories.
