Veterans Day 2016: Events in the Hudson Valley, Places Offering Deals

Where you can honor veterans and where veterans can find discounts

Across the Hudson Valley this Friday and into the weekend, people will celebrate Veterans Day at various events. Here’s a rundown of where you can honor our veterans.

Albany: The Annual Veterans Day Parade will take place on Friday at 11 a.m., located on Central Avenue and Ontario Street, presented by the Tri-County Council Vietnam Era Veterans.

Brewster: VFW Post 672 will hold a Veterans Day ceremony at 10:30 a.m. at Veterans Park on Railroad Avenue.

Garnerville: Leo Laders American Legion Post 130 will host their Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. at Calico Hill Veterans Memorial.

Suffern: There will be a Veterans Day parade and ceremony at 10:30 a.m. hosted by The Fromm Maxwell-DeBaun American Legion Post No. The parade will form at Suffern Village Hall for the march to the Soldier’s Monument where the ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. Rockland County Executive Ed Day will be at the ceremony to announce new programs for veterans. Refreshments will follow.

New Windsor: The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor will conduct a brief ceremony and wreath laying at 2:00 p.m. Friday in commemoration of Veterans Day. This ceremony will take place outside, weather permitting, by the flag poles at the Hall of Honor.
At 2:30 p.m. the program will continue in the Hall of Honor program space, highlighting Purple Heart veterans representing World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Operation Desert Storm, and 9-11. To make a reservation, call (845) 561-1765.

Amenia: A Veterans Day ceremony will take place on Friday at 11 a.m. at Fountain Square, hosted by VFW Post #5444 and Town Officials. 

Beacon: There will be a ceremony on Friday at 11 a.m. at Memorial Building, 413 Main Street, hosted by VFW Post #666.

Monroe: A Veterans Day ceremony will be hosted at 11 a.m. located at the Ambulance Corps Building and Veterans Memorial Park.

Fishkill:  The ceremony is scheduled for Friday at 3 p.m. at Fishkill Supply Depot Veterans Memorial. To be hosted by Fishkill Business Association, Fishkill Historical Society, and Continental Commons.

Village of Fishkill:  The ceremony, hosted by VFW Post #1286 and Village of Fishkill, is scheduled for Friday at 11 a.m. at Veterans Monument, corner of Main Street and Broad Street.

Hyde Park:  The Hyde Park Veterans Day ceremony starts at 10:45 a.m. at Veterans’ Memorial, 4383 Albany Post Road. Hosted by Hyde Park American Legion Post #1303.

Millbrook: A ceremony will be hosted on Friday at 11 a.m. located at Veterans’ Green in front of the Millbrook Fire House. To be hosted by Millbrook VFW Post. #9008.

Poughkeepsie: There will be a Veterans Day ceremony hosted by the Dutchess County Veterans’ Services on Friday 11 a.m. at the Dutchess County War Memorial. 

Rhinebeck: A Veterans Day ceremony is scheduled for Friday at 11 a.m. at Rhinebeck Cemetery, hosted by the Women’s Auxiliary and Montgomery American Legion Post #429.

Here’s where veterans can take advantage of discounts and giveaways for Veterans Day:

• IHOP will be giving away free red, white, and blue pancakes to veterans and active personnel from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.

• Starbucks is offering a free tall brewed coffee for veterans and their spouses.

• Boscobel is offering free house and grounds admission to veterans who show their military I.D. at the front desk during the entire month of November, 2016. The Boscobel Veterans Program also includes half-price admission for up to five family members per visit.

• Veterans Day is also a free Fishing Day, according to the Department of Environmental Conservation, meaning no fishing license or recreational marine fishing registry is required for fresh or marine waters.

• With a valid I.D. current and former service members can score a free “you pick two” from Panera Bread.

 Olive Garden will offer a free entrée from a special menu to active-duty military and military veterans on Veterans Day. The menu features six of Olive Garden’s most popular items.

• Applebee’s has a “Thank You Meal Menu” for veterans and active duty military members.

• On Friday, Walgreens and Duane Reade are offering a 20 percent off Veterans Day discount to all veterans, active duty military personnel, and immediate family members with a Walgreens Balance Rewards card and valid military ID or proof of service. 

• Red Lobster will offer a free appetizer, like sweet chili shrimp or lobster and langostino pizza, or dessert from a select menu with a valid military I.D. on both November 10 and 11.

• Outback Steakhouse is offering a free bloomin’ onion and beverage for active and retired military members with a valid military I.D. at participating restaurants. The “Military Mates” offer means military members and their families can also receive 15 percent off their check.

• Chili’s is offering veterans their choice of a free dinner meal from a special menu of five choices, and is available for not only veterans but also active duty military members.
