Last week as Coraline and I explored the new Oblong Jr. bookstore in Rhinebeck, I ended up taking a little walk down memory lane with the lady behind the desk, spurred on by their Koosh balls and grape-scented erasers.
“You’ve seen what they’ve done to Trolls, right?” she asked me. Of course, I had not, so she showed me this article. Apparently, children’s toys that actually look like children (or the funny, potbellied things children like us liked 20 years ago) aren’t marketable anymore. Trolls — along with other beloved characters like Rainbow Brite, Strawberry Shortcake, and even Candy Land — have been made over with big doe eyes, skinny bodies, and trendy clothes. Imagine if you will, Joan Rivers with a pointy tuft of magenta hair. Good for a laugh, but really quite sad.
The new “Trollz” dolls. What do you think?

Why the world — let alone a kid — needs a “sexy” troll doll is beyond me. Any thoughts?
