This Sleepy Coyote Is Twitter Famous in Albany

One nap in the state Capitol earned a clever coyote its own social media handle.

A not-so-wily coyote was set free in the wild on Thursday, March 29 after it was found dozing Tuesday on the roof of the New York State Museum in Albany. During its escapade, it earned its own Twitter handle: @BudgetCoyote.

Published reports said state troopers evacuated museum visitors on the terrace level floor at about 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, after the coyote was spotted sleeping on the outdoor mezzanine (perhaps dreaming about catching a roadrunner?).

State police and wildlife biologists were left scratching their heads about how the animal found its way to the city center unscathed. The coyote was tranquilized, trapped, and evaluated at a Department of Environmental Conservation wildlife health lab overnight. After being deemed healthy, the furry pup was transported to the woods and released.

Since the museum is across Empire State Plaza from the Capitol, where legislators are wrangling with the state budget, it was inevitable that politics would play a part in the fun. The Twitter handle BudgetCoyote took the story and ran with it, adopting the coyote’s persona and posting — well — interesting tweets:
