Marlboro’s one-of-a-kind live-music venue and restaurant, The Falcon, has opened its long-awaited “pub beneath the club.” Seven years in the making, The Falcon Underground is a new Beer Garden and New York Taproom that combines live music, a curated rock ‘n’ roll museum, beautiful outdoor spaces overlooking Marlboro Falls, and a New York-sourced menu.
Falcon owner Tony Falco always had a vision for a gastropub in the middle floor of the building, a former 19th century button factory located alongside Marlboro Falls. He wanted to create a “scene,” as he puts it, i.e. a place people for people who might not want to sit through an entire set upstairs, but still want to enjoy some late-night live music and fabulous food and drink.
The bar at The Falcon Underground serves an array of beautifully crafted, small-batch New York beers, ales, wines, and spirits. A separate kitchen for The Underground offers a gastropub menu designed by Chef James Cundiff. “The menu will be rotating with the seasons and utilizing all the New York product we can,” says Chef Cundiff. “We are lucky to be in such a thriving area for farming and agriculture, so supporting all that is New York is what we’re aiming to do.” Patrons can order from among pizzas, appetizers, salads and desserts, with special additions such as local beef burgers, bratwursts, and fresh pretzels.

The Avalon Archives Museum of Roots, Rock ‘n’ Roll has also been permanently installed at The Underground. Founder, director, and curator Ned Moran’s extraordinary collection of rare and obscure photos, posters, album covers, books, and recordings are the primary visuals for the intimate space. More than 100 reclaimed doors rescued from Zaborsky’s Emporium in Kingston were installed on the room’s ceiling below a sophisticated acoustic system courtesy of John Storyk, who designed Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Lady Studios.
And then there’s the music. A variety of performances will take place at The Underground, including “Wednesday Sessions,” showcasing the work of singer-songwriters, as well as jazz, roots, and blues musicians, plus spoken word and hip-hop artists. As with their main stage, The Falcon Underground does not sell tickets or charge a cover; they rely on the generosity of the listening public and encourage patrons to leave contributions for musicians in a donation box in support of the artists whose work they have enjoyed.
