Thanks to the Culinary Institute of America, the spirit of Anthony Bourdain lives on in the Hudson Valley.

At an intimate ceremony on October 18, the Dutchess County college dedicated a lasting memorial to the iconic chef and CIA alumni on the main floor of Roth Hall. CIA President Dr. Tim Ryan led the quiet event, with Bourdain’s friends and fellow chefs Eric Ripert and José Andrés onsite to celebrate the alum’s legacy.

Since the passing of the Parts Unknown host and Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly author in June 2018, the CIA has memorialized the culinarian’s impact on the food industry via tributes like a mural on campus and, in June, the establishment of a scholarship to help students study abroad in pursuit of global cuisine and culture. Dubbed the Anthony Bourdain Legacy Scholarship, it was created by Andrés and Ripert in June with a goal to make the funds accessible for students beginning in the spring 2020 semester.

“Anthony Bourdain opened the world of food and different cultures to all through his brilliant storytelling,” Ryan says. “It is therefore fitting that his memory is being honored at the CIA through a scholarship for students interested in experiencing cuisines and cultures around the globe.”

Today, students and visitors alike can pay their respects to Bourdain’s memory inside Roth Hall’s main corridor, now renamed Roth Hall Les Halles d’Anthony Bourdain. The chef may be gone, but his memory continues to inspire budding chefs and culinarians in the Hudson Valley and beyond every single day.
