The Big Screen

IMAX-equipped theaters debut at two Valley locations

Rejoice, Mid-Hudson and Capital Region moviegoers: The Valley finally has not one, but two IMAX theaters north of Westchester and Rockland counties.

ShowTime Cinemas in Newburgh and Regal Crossgates Stadium 18 in Albany are both slated to unveil new IMAX screens just in time for Oscar season. (IMAX theaters are already located in West Nyack, New Rochelle, and White Plains.) A standard IMAX screen measures a whopping 72 feet wide by 53 feet high; it is also slightly curved in shape, and positioned in closer proximity to the audience than most movie screens. Combined with digital surround sound, these theaters offer viewers that “you are there” feeling from the moment the lights go down.

Crossgates premiered Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa in IMAX last month; as we go to press, a starting date has yet to be announced for the Newburgh theater. But to all you film fanatics, please remember to exercise restraint: just because the screen is bigger doesn’t mean your tub of popcorn should be, too. Tickets sell for around $14.
