Tallman Mountain's Cool Pool

Swimming at the Sparkill state park goes back 83 years.

In May, a pool returned to Tallman Mountain State Park in Sparkill for the first time in seven years. Tallman Beach and Pool Club, a state-park facility requiring daily or seasonal membership, sits on the Piermont Marsh, a 1,017-acre Nature Reserve on the Palisades, with views of the Hudson River. In 1928, the site was occupied by The Standard Trap Rock Company, until the Palisades Interstate Park Commission (PIPC) attempted to take it over, claiming they had an obligation to preserve its beauty.

The legal conflict continued for five years, until the United States Supreme Court granted the land to the PIPC. Workers contracted through a government program called the Temporary Emergency Relief Administration, which offered work to people who’d lost their jobs during the Great Depression, first built the pool and recreation area in 1933. It continued to be a local hotspot in the summer months until 2009, when the facility shut down due to a lack of funding.

Six years later, in 2015, Billy Procida’s Tallman Beach and Pool Club, LLC, signed a 20-year lease with Tallman Mountain State Park, and the facility reopened its doors, promising many more years of summer fun and refreshments for Rockland County and New York State residents.
