Okay guys, summer is almost here — and not a moment too soon. No, it wasn’t a terrible winter; we got away with just a few blizzards. (Remember the winter of 2010-2011 when it snowed — a lot — week after week after week?) But still, it’s high time for the sun to shine, schools to shutter their doors, and the summer season to swing into high gear.
That’s where our annual Summer Fun Guide comes into play. Here, we outline dozens of ways to get outside and make the most of your summer, from paddleboarding (apparently, it’s the fastest growing water sport in the world) to visiting a zoo to taking a river cruise to watching a double features at the drive-in.
Personally, I plan to partake in several of these activities this year. Some say that paddleboarding is a combination of surfing and kayaking; I’ve never surfed (and I’m not exactly known to have the best balance, although my shoes may be to blame), so I’m not sure what to expect, but I’m willing to give it a shot. And my three-year-old is already chattering about the pool, her bicycle (it’s really a tricycle, but she doesn’t need to know that), visiting her “friends” (that would be the cows, pigs, sheep, and chickens at the Stony Kill Farm), and — believe it or not — painting her toenails.
We may even camp out in the backyard this summer. All in all, I’m anticipating another fun-filled season with my little one. Of course, for many people summer also means hitting the links, and our annual Golf Guide will surely help you get your game on. Also in this issue, photographer Mike Nelson takes you on a one-of-a-kind ride as he outlines his four favorite local motorcycle routes. From cruising on the sometimes-terrifying, sometimes-exhilarating, but always scenic Storm King Highway to a Catskills road overflowing with waterfalls, you’ll certainly enjoy the trip.
