Stunt Camp at Woodstock Country Day School Teaches Kids Stunts

Boom! Bam! A stunt camp in Woodstock teaches kids all the tricks behind their favorite blockbuster films

Don’t want the kids sitting passively in front of the TV this summer watching gunfights and explosions? Then send them to Stunt Camp at Woodstock Country Day School to create their own shoot-’em-ups and explosions. Not real ones, of course, but the kind Hollywood special effects experts produce. The five-day camp, which is for ages eight and up, is spearheaded by Steve Wolf, a veteran special effects professional in film and TV. Wolf says that stunt performers aren’t daredevils because each stunt is meticulously planned and executed to eliminate risk. “We safely create the illusion of danger,” he says.

Stunt Camp pulls back the curtain, teaching campers the secrets and science behind special effects. And what better way to kick off summer camp than with “Intro to Fireball,” a primer on how fiery explosions are staged for film? Later sessions include learning to rappel; how to use zip lines and simulate flying; creating atmospheric conditions such as snow (falling and on the ground), fog, mist, and smoke; simulating the sound and impact of gunfire; and using an air cannon, a crash pad, and various pyrotechnic devices.

Duplicate camps are slated to be held on July 18-22, 25-29, and August 1-5 and 8-12. Camp is held daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and costs $650 per week (plus another $50 if you want the camp to supply lunch).
