Looking to book a summertime getaway to Europe? It may now be easier and more affordable than you think. Governor Andrew Cuomo announced this morning that Stewart International Airport will be partnering with Norwegian Airlines to offer routes to Ireland and Scotland as well as open a base for Norwegian’s pilots, cabin crew, and two Boeing 737-MAX aircrafts. The collaboration is expected to create over 230 jobs, as well as affordable flights to destinations such as Belfast, Dublin, Edinburgh and Shannon.
Beginning in June, Norwegian Air will be offering transatlantic flights out of Stewart International Airport starting at $65 one way. Tickets are on sale now, offering cheap flights and other savings opportunities such as discounts for pre-paying for checked luggage and a meal service.
“This exciting partnership will create new economic opportunities for Stewart Airport and the surrounding region and demonstrates the success of our efforts to transform airports across New York into 21st century hubs of commercial activity,” Gov. Cuomo said in a statement.
International flights for the summer season and ensuing winter season are as follows:
- Flights to Edinburgh, Scotland will begin daily on June 15 until Oct. 28. Beginning Oct. 29, flights will be offered three times per week.
- Flights to Belfast, Northern Ireland will be offered three times per week starting July 1st through Oct. 28. Beginning Oct. 29, flights will be offered twice a week.
- Flights to Dublin, Ireland will begin daily on July 1st-Oct. 28. Beginning Oct. 29, flights will be offered three times per week.
- And lastly, flights to Shannon, Ireland will be biweekly beginning July 2.
UPDATE: According to The Times Herald-Record, by early Thursday afternoon all of the low-cost, $65 introductory rate tickets had been purchased. Rates are now in the $200-$300 range.
