In our April Religion article, we mistakenly stated that Kingston’s St. Joseph School had shut down earlier this year. The facility has in fact remained open and shifted its focus — the curriculum now emphasizes science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics.
The institution, which offers a pre-kindergarten through eighth grade program, celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2012 and doesn’t seem to be going anywhere soon: Its enrollment has grown more than 70 percent in the past few years. Principal Jeanne Dolamore stresses the importance of school programs in which older children organize assemblies and act as mentors to those in the lower grades. “We have to make leadership possible for children,” she says. “We need to have students on school committees, and they need to have a voice in their school.”
The pupils also participate in a variety of community service projects, making use of the skills they’ve learned in the classroom to help others. Says Dolamore: “Our goal is to be moving forward and seeking the best possible environment for our children.”
