Signs of Spring in the Valley: Spring Animals

We count down to March 20 (and warmer weather) with our favorite local signs of spring

Ed.: We can’t wait for warmer weather, so from now until the official start of spring (that’s March 20 — mark your calendars!), we’re delivering our top 15 signs of spring. Check www.hvmag.com daily for more posts.

Countdown to Spring (Day 8): Animal Sights and Sounds

Look (or listen) for any of these three springtime creatures:

Spring peepers: When you hear these tiny frogs whistling for a mate, spring is here. You may not be able to spot these sneaky amphibians, but you are sure to see spring on the horizon upon their arrival.

Ducks: Look up in the sky, and you’ll likely see ducks and geese. Ducks overheard are searching for a place to mate and nest for the season, which means warmer weather is on its way.

Butterflies: Michigan’s butterfly exhibit at Meijer Gardens is the largest in the U.S. — and it opens in March. You won’t have to fly to Grand Rapids to spy a butterfly, however. When these winged beauties come out of winter hibernation in the Valley, expect spring showers and flowers to arrive with them.
