You can’t quite argue that weaving through a crowded mall measures up to the luxury of wandering down a narrow, cobblestone Parisian street and browsing through the myriad of elegant boutiques. So if fond memories of European shopping jaunts are becoming all too faint, you’ll be happy to pay a visit to New City’s Indigo Chic. Mother/daughter co-owners Lynda and Jessye Piscitelli of Dutchess County have created a vibrant atmosphere parallel to that of your favorite clothing shop à l’Europe.
“We lived in Paris for four years,” says Lynda. “After shopping in the boutiques, I wanted to open one that offered that friendly, personal service — unlike what you find at department stores here.” While Lynda’s first retail operation, Indigo Chic of Cold Spring, may be “more charming, more European than the one in New City,” this new sister store offers the same first-rate individual service and advice. “All of our sales assistants are fashion-forward and know how to help the shopper,” says Lynda. “You always receive excellent personal assistance and warmth.” Plus, these style experts know how — and are eager — to dress you. “I’ve always had great taste,” says Lynda.

At the New City location, which opened last March, fashionistas ranging in age from 15 to 75 delight in examining racks full of the hottest and trendiest designer duds. “We carry everything from intimates to cocktail to sportswear, to little sexy shoes and accessories,” says Lynda. Brands include Sweet Pea, Juicy Couture, Velvet, and True Religion. “Our core price [range] is $25 to $300,” she says.
According to the Piscitellis, business has been great so far, and it seems the Rockland County location has played a part in that success. “There is a huge retail demand here,” says Lynda. “Everyone here has to commute somewhere — whether it’s the city or New Jersey. They need this type of clothing, and with the price of gas these days, they’re happy they can get it locally.” Although to these ladies, their business is about more than just selling merchandise. “We help women feel good about how they look,” says Lynda. “But we always take into account the personality and tastes of each person.”
Indigo Chic also supports local schools and makes donations to various charities. “We do fashion shows to help the community,” explains Lynda. “We did one for breast cancer and had one for St. Augustine in October, and another comes up in November. We love doing them — it’s so much fun.”
