Without question, the most unique hotel in the Catskills (if not in all of New York State) is the Roxbury Motel in Delaware County. Created by owners Gregory Henderson and Joseph Massa (read our September 2011 profile here), each of the hotel’s 27 guest rooms is decorated around a theme taken from a popular movie or TV show of the ’60s, ’70s, or ’80s. A fan of Star Trek? The “Final Frontier” suite has a fiber-optic shooting-star light show. “Genie’s Bottle” pays homage to I Dream of Genie with a perfectly round bathroom — just like the bottom of a bottle would be — that took six months to build. The Gilligan’s Island salute, “Maryann’s Coconut Cream Pie,” has a ceiling designed to look just like a meringue pie (below).

The newest addition to the Roxbury is “The Digs,” a hybrid takeoff on adventure films like Indiana Jones and Romancing the Stone. This three-bedroom cottage, which sleeps six, was inspired by exotic treasures Henderson and Massa uncovered at the estate auction of a local world traveler. Items from more than 25 countries, from Sweden to Senegal, were part of their purchase — and now make up the Digs’s decor. But it’s the custom-made fish tank in the bathroom — which, along with fish, contains an Egyptian sarcophagus — that truly steals the show.
