The Roxbury Barn wedding melted hearts with breathtaking scenery, mouth-watering barbecue, and a dance under the stars.
They say love conquers all. It soars above the highest mountain peaks and glows brighter than the shiniest stars in the galaxy.
For Brigid Hurn Maloney and Caitlin Bone, it brought them to the top of a tractor.
Hurn Maloney, who is from England and California, and Bone, who grew up in New Jersey, met by chance at Mount Holyoke College, which they both attended. When Bone decided to climb to the top of a tractor parked in the middle of campus one day, Hurn Maloney was the only person in the couple’s group of mutual friends who was daring enough to join her.
The pair had never crossed paths prior to that moment, so it was something of a surprise when Hurn Maloney walked into her first Intro to Spanish class the following day to find that the only available seat was the one right next to Bone.
Seven years and countless adventures later, the couple decided girlfriend status didn’t cut it anymore.
And thus, the race to propose began.
“Without realizing it, we both designed really similar rings from the same jeweler on Etsy, who emailed Brigid saying, ‘I have two rings going to the same building in the same city and I think I switched them!’” Hurd Maloney explains. To go with the rings, Bone crafted a scrapbook of the couple’s adventures with a note on the final page that read, “Will you be my Ms. Bone?” Later on, they added pages to the back of the book for use as their wedding guestbook.
When it came time to plan their ceremony, the couple knew they wanted to be surrounded by nature.
“Our favorite places to visit are national parks, so we wanted to make sure that our wedding felt like we were right in the middle of a beautiful park,” Hurn Maloney notes. “We were hoping for less-is-more and I think we found that!”
They fell head over heels when they spotted a photo of the wooded terrain at Roxbury Farm in Roxbury. After visiting the site for themselves, they knew it was the one for them.
Hearts set on an upstate ceremony, the duo powered through their wedding planning during a high-stress time of life. Bone took her New York Bar exam three weeks before walking down the aisle, so she wasn’t able to devote much brain space to anything beyond the test. Fortunately, Hurn Maloney knew exactly what her bride-to-be would want to wear, so she was able to pick out a flowing white skirt from Watters and a sparkling pink top that paired perfectly with Hurn Maloney’s glittery tie and custom Bindle & Keep suit.
On a warm summer day at the end of August, the couple celebrated their love in the heart of a Hudson Valley forest. The aura was bubbly, yet serene, vivacious, yet reverent. It was a feeling that lingered throughout the day, shining brightest during meaningful moments. When Hurn Maloney’s best friend performed, for instance, it resulted in both laughter and tears. During the ceremony, meanwhile, another friend read a passage from the Supreme Court decision that legalized same-sex marriage to honor the duo’s union and its significance.
“Although it quadrupled the amount of tears, it was important for us to acknowledge all the people who fought for us to get here,” Hurd Maloney says.
After that, the party began in earnest. Under the towering canopy of Roxbury trees, the newlyweds and their closest friends dug into barbecue, savored a wedding cake made by Bone’s sister-in-law, and danced the night away. As laughter filled the air and smiles abounded, the couple stole away from the bonfire at the end of the night to stroll into the forest. Alone in the quiet of the Hudson Valley, they danced under the stars with only a song from a cell phone speaker to guide them.
“It was so amazing to just dance, be together, and take it all in,” Hurn Maloney reminisces. Looking back on the day, she’s thankful that she and Bone had such a loving team of family, friends, and vendors to support them.
“Choosing vendors you really like that are there to help you plan all the little details makes everything so much less stressful,” she says. “We are so lucky to find the talented and amazing people we worked with.”
