Chris O’Grady started in his first Major League Baseball game Saturday, pitching 5â…“ innings for the Miami Marlins and taking home the win for his efforts.
A graduate of Clarkstown High School and George Mason University, O’Grady was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in 2012, before being released as a free agent this spring and signing with the Marlins May 6.
O’Grady stood in for former All-Star and fellow southpaw Jeff Locke, who was designated for assignment earlier in the week. He gave up three runs and only two walks against the San Francisco Giants, with four strikeouts before being relieved by closer A.J. Ramos. The final score was 5-4.
O’Grady has spent five years playing Double-A and Triple-A ball, netting him a career minors ERA of 3.24. His record is now 1-0, with his second Major League game scheduled for Friday, July 14.
