Rhinebeck has an old-money vibe without the pretention, posh but not pompous. This personality is well represented by some of its most famous residents. It carries the humility of nice-guy rom-commer Paul Rudd with the high culture of photography megastar Annie Leibovitz. The village also has a decidedly family vibe, a trait that is perhaps best observed at the annual Porchfest, a massive block party that pours the whole village out their front doors onto their lemonade-worthy porches.

The four-corner downtown stays busy on weekends with visitors and village locals intermingling at mainstays like Bread Alone bakery for morning coffee, lunch and drinks at Terrapin, or dinner at Le Petit Bistro. Nearby attractions include the Omega Institute, one of the country’s best holistic learning centers, and the town of Hyde Park, home to the Franklin Delano Roosevelt National Historic Site.

It’s no surprise that schools here get great rankings (it was 92 in the state on US News and World Report’s 2016 list) and that houses trend towards the higher price range. Median home price here is $316,500. Coveted village center Colonials and Victorians, with their big Porchfest porches, cost from $500,000 to more than $1 million. Buyers can take comfort in the low turnover, knowing it is the type of town many are happy to settle into for life.
