Poughkeepsie’s Vassar-Warner Home to Close After 153 Years

Dutchess County’s only nonprofit senior living facility will close its doors this fall.

In Poughkeepsie, Vassar-Warner Home has been a much-celebrated piece of the city’s history since its opening in 1871. The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is Dutchess County’s sole nonprofit senior living residence. As of late July of this year, the facility announced it will close its doors this fall following many operational challenges.

The historic building, which includes an adult home for people who are 55 or older as well as an assisted living program and respite care services, is working diligently to relocate its current 35 residents to neighboring facilities that can best meet the seniors’ needs. The New York State Department of Health has approved Vassar-Warner Home’s plans to transition its residents and families to new homes on or before October 14 of this year.

“It is with great sadness and regret that I share this news,” says Ericka Von Salews, executive director of Vassar-Warner Home. “Vassar-Warner Home has been a beloved part of our community and a much-needed resource locally. We will remain open until every resident has been placed in their new home and we will do everything possible to make this transition smooth for our residents and their loved ones, as well as the compassionate team who work here.”

Currently accommodating 18 individuals in independent living and 17 seniors in assisted living, the facility is disheartened to cease its services. The closing comes after repeated efforts to recruit help privately and on the state and local level, along with other challenges including unsustainable Medicaid reimbursement rates, occupancy obstacles, and rising costs, all of which have made operation of the home impossible.

“Our Home Board of Trustees and Foundation Board would like to thank the 34 dedicated staff members who provide excellent, award-winning care to our residents, including Executive Director Ericka Von Salews, who has led Vassar-Warner Home successfully for the past eight years,” says Vassar-Warner Home Board of Trustees President Ellen C. Smyth.

Vassar-Warner Home, located at 52 South Hamilton Street in Poughkeepsie, will close its doors for the first time since 1871 on October 14.
