Thru Jan. 3: Westchester’s Winter Wonderland Be sure to catch the tail end of this cold weather festival. Sip on hot chocolate while strolling amid more than 2.5 million sparkling LED lights. Hit the outdoor ice skating rink (skate rentals are an additional charge), take a sleigh ride, browse the artisan craft village, watch a live ice sculpting demonstration, and enjoy some live entertainment. Arabian Nights
Jan. 16: Family Concert The Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra again presents its popular family concert. The brainchild of conductor David Bernard (who conducted a Star Wars-themed concert in Darth Vader getup this past summer), this concert is aimed at engaging young people in classical music. Based on The Arabian Nights stories, the day combines pre-show activities (like an instrument petting zoo), a narrated presentation of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, and Aleksandr Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances brought to life by a local dance troupe. The World on a String
Jan. 17: ArtsRock Puppet Festival Back for the third year in a row, the wildly popular day of marionettes features both local and national performers. Rick Lyon (of Sesame Street fame) tells the tale of a young farm boy who tries his darnedest to make all his dreams come true. Skye Leith and Jill Liflander, both local puppeteers, open the show with some silly skits and a bit of magic. If the Shoe Fits
Jan. 19-24: Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella The sensational musical, written by the same duo responsible for the likes of The Sound of Music and South Pacific, brings the classic fairy tale to life. Poor Cinderella is mistreated and put to work by her nasty stepmother and stepsisters, but through it all, she manages to keep a cheerful spirit. One day, the prince announces that he is giving a ball and Cinderella’s stepmother forbids her to attend. But with the help of a fairy godmother, she soon becomes the belle of the ball — but only until midnight, when she loses her glass slipper in her hasty exit. Jan. 30: Winter Wildlife Even though it may seem like all the animals have either gone south or are hibernating for this cold season, there are still plenty of critters who show themselves during the wintertime. Join a wildlife expert on a snowy stroll and learn all about these furry, scaly, and feathered creatures and their survival techniques. Don’t forget to dress warm for some good old-fashioned fun in the snow! Recommended ages two and up. 2-3 p.m. $8, $5 members.
