Pick the Perfect Orchid for a Proper Mother's Day Gift

Surprise your mom (or wife) with something beautiful and hardy this year.

Orchids could very well be the best Mother’s Day gift you’ll ever give that special lady in your life. They are not only exotic, beautiful, and long-lasting, they are relatively easy to maintain.

“Orchid growing is not difficult if you get the right orchid for your growing environment, don’t overwater, and feed properly,” says Ruth Nattras, president of the Mid-Hudson Orchid Society.

Here are some tips to help you get the perfect plant:

• Phalaenopsis is one of the most popular varieties, according to Margaret Bridge of Black Meadow Flora in Chester, because they can bloom for months and require only relatively low light, temperatures between 65–85 degrees, and weekly watering to flourish. They also come in mini varieties that will fit on a windowsill or larger varieties in novelty colors.

• If you really want to knock mom’s socks off, choose from exotic orchids like Cattleya, Dendrobium, the “Lady Slippers,” Oncidium, Cymbidium and Vandaceous, which are readily available.

• If fragrance is a priority, Bridge recommends Cattleya, “or Oncidium Sharry Baby if you like the smell of chocolate!”
